Aer Lingus (IATA: EI, ICAO: EIN) is a passenger airline from Ireland.
Aer Lingus services 93 destinations on 51 aircraft. They have 4,500 employees and moved 13.1 million passengers on 56 aircraft in 2018. This number was up from the previous 10.9 million in 2017. Its hub is in Dublin with a focus on Belfast-City, Cork and Shannon. Its callsign is SHAMROCK.
EI began in 1936 and was founded by the government. It went private in 2006 and 2015 before becoming owned by International Airlines Group. In 1936, the first places serviced were between Dublin and Bristol Airport in the United Kingdom on a six-seater biplane. Its second airplane was another biplane, but with four engines. It was out of commission during the war and resumed flying in 1945 with a flight to London.
It got its first Boeing in the 1970s and was used by Pope John Paul II in 1979, which made it the second European airline to transport the Pope. He flew in a modified 747 known as St. Patrick from Shannon to Boston.
