Over 43 million passengers move through this airport on one of its three asphalt runways. Two of those runways are 3,900 meters and one is 3,800 meters long. The passenger total for 2021 was rebounding from the COVID-19 years with over 11 million travelers counted. Three modernized terminals include sleeperettes for comfort and three lounges for long waits.

FCO was unofficially opened in 1960 – the official opening was in 1961 – when there was a need to handle the extra traffic from the Summer Olympics. The airport was built on an ancient Roman port where they discovered Caligula’s Giant Ship during the airport’s excavation. The airport started with two runways but added a third by the late 1960s so it could handle 30 flights a day.

Parking for both short- and long-term can be found in a multilevel parking lot with motorcycle spaces among the 4,500 available spaces. Ground transportation includes buses, taxis and rental cars, as well as trains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

Rome Fiumicino Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
While this has been the first time I have used FCO I have to say it didn't amuse me, as much as I wanted. The arrival was great, and the bus service from the plane to the gate area was fast, and it was available almost immediately after our arrival. Though the arrival part of Terminal 3 was not the most organized places on Earth, as it is a bit too small, for the amount of people arriving to the same terminal in the morning hours. I'm more than happy with the departure side though, as that is airy, and spacious. But on a warm day like today (10/10/16) the inside of the building could get really heated up. So you'll have to move in between the departure waiting areas if you don't like the sauna feeling. Other than that it is quite a good airport, with great transport links not just to Rome, but also to other parts of Italy as well.

FCO airport as it is was quite a good experience when it came to the departure the side. At least it was less hectic than it was when I have arrived. Terminal 3 as it is, is quite comfortable and big enough to be able to spend a nice amount of time while you're waiting for your flight. All in all it is a great airport to fly from

Very intricate transfer between terminals, in consequence of we were also late to our flight. But delicious and cheap food in cafe of Italian cuisine!

No lounge for star alliance member. Yes, LH members can use the AF's lounge, but german wing's uses cannot.

★★★★★
Very easy to understand where to go, staff will guide you to immigration. Have to ask staff to find a bus platform. You have a big choice of ways to Rome. Wifi works even outside, helped me a lot.

Get by bus right to terminal 3. Had a good croissant as breakfast. Check-in has no lines, also they speak little russian and gave me a window seats as I asked. When it was time to go to the gates, i found that I lost a wallet at waiting zone, but went to police and after 5min they give it me back, i was so happy! Had horrified by security-check line, but it didn't take so long. Get to the gate just 5min before boarding begins. No displays after security check in case gate changed.

★☆☆☆☆
Don't travel with checked in baggage through this airport because they even can not manage the transfer in 3 HOURS! It happened 3/3 times! The airport service is a shame!!!

★★☆☆☆
Slow service, our gate almost without sitting places. Airplane was waiting 30min, meanwhile 4 staff people was playing with computer instead of boarding passengers.
