Turkish Airlines (IATA: TK, ICAO: THY) is a passenger airline from Turkey.
Turkish Airlines offers 340 destinations on 386 airplanes. Its callsign is TURKISH. In 2018, it moved 75.1 million passengers and 1,412 tonnes of cargo on 332 airplanes to 306 destinations. Its 2022 numbers include 340 stops in 129 countries. 12 of those are in the United States, and 53 are domestic stops.
TK started in 1933 as the Turkish State Airlines and was a part of the national defense team. It began with two 5-seat Kingbirds, two 4-seat F 13s and one 10-seat ANT-9. The 1940s saw Douglas aircrafts brought in to expand the airline onto the international scene. It reorganized in the 1950s and the jets showed up in 1967 when the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 went into service.
A new government came in and realized that TK was the gateway to Turkey, so they brought the airline into the modern transportation world, and part of that change included a technical center at Yeşilköy Airport. Its hub is now Istanbul Atatürk Airport and they have gone from 30 aircraft in the 1980s to the 300-plus planes they have now.
