Riga is the home of Latvia’s capital, and RIX is the biggest airport in the Baltic States. It is the home of 76 direct-flight destinations, and SmartLynx Airlines and airBaltic, the largest carrier at the airport, have their hubs there. It was built in 1973 and is owned by Latvia. They modernized the airport in 2001 on the 800th anniversary of the founding of Riga. They opened a new terminal extension in 2016.

RIX has one runway, and a single terminal with two stories and 36 check-in counters. It contains the usual shopping, food, and drink offerings found at most airports, and there are several piers to accommodate arrivals and departures. The busiest route in and out of Riga Airport is to London.

Transportation to and from the airport includes buses and trains through the Rail Baltica project, which was completed in 2018. There are three parking areas with 1,500 parking spots for both long- and short-term parking for those who choose to arrive by car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Riga Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 2 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 25 different shops around Riga Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

Duty Free Allowance at Riga Airport

If you are travelling to Latvia from a country within the EU, then you can bring in an unlimited amount of goods that you have bought in that country as long as the price you paid included tax and the goods are for your own personal use (this also includes items that you intend to be gifts).

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Riga Airport from inside the EU

Despite there not being a limit on the amount of alcoholic and tobacco goods that you can bring in from a country in the EU, if you have goods that are more than the following guidelines, then there is a good chance that you will be questioned by a Customs Officer about what you intend to do with the goods:

  • 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, or 1 kg of tobacco
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 20 litres of fortified wine

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Riga Airport from outside the EU

If you are entering Latvia from a country outside of the EU, then your allowance changes to the amounts listed below. Again, these must be for your own personal use. If you intend to sell the goods or if you go over these allowances, then you may have to pay duty and/or tax).

  • 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • 4 litres of still wine
  • 1 litre of alcohol over 22% volume or 2 litres of alcohol less than 22% volume
  • 16 litres of beer
  • up to £390 worth of all other goods
Riga Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
Gets boring after a few hours. Downstairs area has some soft chairs and decent internet, usually less crowded. Snack foods from Narvesen (sandwiches are pretty good), pizza place is good. Shopping is just past security, away from the gates.
- Saskia S

★★★★☆
Smile people! Food is expensive and scarce. Lounge is minimalist and works for several airlines. Convenient and efficient

★★★★★

- Maxim Smirnov

★★★★★
It is growing airport. New terminal is almost done. Overall it is very comfy and cozy. Love it! Food is great and easy to reach by bus 22.
- Rihards Lieknins

★★★☆☆
Nice airport with many facilities and smoking terace in the terminal, but the security check people was not friendly at all, and they spoke bad English. The WiFi at the airport was excellent.
- Fredrik Skjegstad Jo

★★☆☆☆
Perhaps the only plus side is that the transfer really works. Other than that, the terminal was super crowded and there was not enough space and seating.
- Niki Matilainen

★★★★★
The airport itself is quite small, so you can't expect a huge shopping mall in it, but there are all that you need. Extra is a great, free wifi. The airport is close to the city center and connected by cheap public transportation (1,15 eur). Fast security control - from the moment you enter the airport (without checked in luggage) you can get to your gate in less then 10 minutes. Obviously the time differs, but it has never taken me more than 10 minutes :)
- Artis Spertāls

★★★★★
The Riga airport (RIX) is awesome! I've been here only for a short layover and I loved it since soon. It's tidy, cozy, and extremely detailed in everything. It's way better than many many other big hubs in the world. Definitely one of the best airport I've ever visited.
- Ernes

★★★★☆
Neat and well run airport, Have flown in and out at least 10 times and each time has been a pleasure. Staff are really helpful and eager to help.
- John Neel

★★★★★
Wifi works without logging in and is fast and unlimited. No drinking fountains, but water in the faucets is drinkable.
