American Airlines makes Dallas its hub, which helps to make DFW the third busiest airport in the world. The airport is 17,207 acres has its own fire protection, police and emergency medical services. It serves 260 destinations through 28 airlines, which puts it over the 200 destination mark that very few worldwide airports have achieved.
In 1927, Dallas approached Fort Worth with a proposal to start an airport. Fort Worth declined, so both built their own airports. The Civil Aeronautics Administration put aside money in 1940 to combine the airports. The two cities could not agree, so again, there was no airport. They finally reached an agreement in 1966 and built the airport in 1969.
DFW has gone from four terminals to five with a total of 188 gates. Ground transportation includes taxis, shared rides, limousines, buses and rental cars. Parking and valet services are available, and cell phone lots let you wait on passengers for free.
