There are close to 300 daily flights from its two asphalt runways and three-level terminal based on 2,060 acres. It handles a large number of charters, too. 18.9 million passengers moved through WAW in 2019, helping it to remain Poland’s busiest airport.
WAW opened in 1934 as the Warsaw-Okecie Airport and eventually was renamed for Warsaw’s Frédéric Chopin in 2001. The airport added an underground train that connects the airport to Warsaw’s rail system, and a new terminal was built in 2015. During WWII, there was a fierce battle between Poland and Germany at the airport that left it in ruins. At the end of the war, the airport was rebuilt, and it expanded in 1961 with the purchase of a radar system for civilian air traffic. 1969 saw the official opening of the airport, and one million people moved through the new terminal.
Parking is abundant with 3,000 spots for long- and short-term parking, bus parking and premium parking. There are 89 Kiss and Fly spaces. Ground transportation includes buses, trains, taxis and rental cars.
