This airport was renamed to include Willy Brandt after West Berlin’s mayor and West German chancellor to its name. It has two runways; one is 3,600 meters and asphalt, and one is 4,000 meters and concrete. It has three terminals offering state-of-the-art technology and services that include banks, dining and lounges.
BER was originally slated to open in 2011, but due to many delays and other problems, it did not open its doors until 2020. The construction started in 2006 when it was designed to replace three other airports that included Tegel, Schönefeld and Templehof airports. While it only has three terminals, there are plans to add two more, which is why there is a Terminal 5 that houses the old Schönefeld airport terminal.
Due to Terminal 5’s location, it is necessary to transfer between Terminal 5 and the other two via normal ground options like cars and taxis. Other transportation options to and from the airport include buses, shuttles, trains and more. Parking is plentiful with 10,000 spots available.
