Welcome to Orlando Airport (MCO), the busiest airport in Florida and ranked number 10 in the country. In 2019, over 50 million passengers traveled through its doors, with Southwest being the largest carrier. Serving 135 domestic and international destinations, MCO sits on a sprawling 12,600 acres, making it the largest airport in the United States in terms of land use. Originally a military base, its IATA code reflects the historic McCoy Air Force Base that once occupied the site.
Opened in 1942, before the establishment of the U.S. Air Force, MCO was used for bombing and navigation competitions during the 1950s. Civilian flights began arriving in the 1960s, and MCO’s capacity to expand its runway for Boeing 707s and other large aircraft led to the shift of all civilian air travel to this location. With the opening of Magic Kingdom in 1971, MCO became a popular destination for tourists.
