It has two asphalt concrete runways; one is 3,707 meters and the other is 3,010 meters long. It served 4.6 million passengers in 2021, which is down from its normal 16 million passengers in 2019. It consists of two terminals, with Terminal 2 having two wings that are connected by a Sky Court where passengers can wait, as well as do their shopping.

BUD began as an idea in 1938 as both a civilian and military use airport. By the end of WWII, much of the airport had been destroyed, so when it reopened in the 1950s, traffic was limited. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, there was a need for further development as traffic reached one million in 1974. This prompted a new control tower, another runway and a new terminal that could handle 3.5 million annual passengers.

Parking is available for short- and long-term parking located near the terminal, as well as at a lot within three to five minutes by foot. There are buses, taxis, trains and rental cars that offer transportation to and from the airport.

How far away is Budapest Airport from from the centre of Budapest?

It takes approximately 36 mins to drive the 14.2 mi (22.9 kilometres) between the centre of Budapest and Budapest Airport, making it accessible enough to facilitate and accommodate any travel plans. Make sure you arrive in time to take the opportunity to explore the duty-free shopping opportunities located inside BUD airport, where you can purchase exclusive perfumes and colognes, cigarattes, alcohol, food items, confectionery, and souvenirs from Hungary.

What are the parking options at Budapest Airport?

External parking options are available. Don't forget that you can also opt to leave your car at home, thanks to the many public transportation alternatives that can take you to and from Budapest Airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Budapest Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 3 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 63 different shops around Budapest Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

Duty Free Allowance at Budapest Airport

If you are travelling to Hungary from a country within the EU, then you can bring in an unlimited amount of goods that you have bought in that country as long as the price you paid included tax and the goods are for your own personal use (this also includes items that you intend to be gifts).

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Budapest Airport from inside the EU

Despite there not being a limit on the amount of alcoholic and tobacco goods that you can bring in from a country in the EU, if you have goods that are more than the following guidelines, then there is a good chance that you will be questioned by a Customs Officer about what you intend to do with the goods:

  • 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, or 1 kg of tobacco
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 20 litres of fortified wine

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Budapest Airport from outside the EU

If you are entering Hungary from a country outside of the EU, then your allowance changes to the amounts listed below. Again, these must be for your own personal use. If you intend to sell the goods or if you go over these allowances, then you may have to pay duty and/or tax).

  • 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • 4 litres of still wine
  • 1 litre of alcohol over 22% volume or 2 litres of alcohol less than 22% volume
  • 16 litres of beer
  • up to £390 worth of all other goods
Budapest Airport Reviews

★★★★★
Budapest airport is very organised, there are signs everywhere, and there are also many shops. The terminals are clean, but sometimes the WiFi is slow.
- Szűcs Benedek

★★★★☆
One of the nicest airports I've been to that I didn't stay in that country, simply getting to the Airport is a bit hard from where I usually stay which is in Croatia where most of my relatives are, as there is no flight from Dublin-Osijek or Dublin-Belgrade this is particularly tricky but nevertheless the airport itself is still great.
- Electro Septic

★★★★☆
The baggage took a really long time to come! And plus the airport is far from the city so I took even longer to get to the place I was staying at
- Rahul Waslekar

★★★★☆
You get amazing ice cream at the airport! Just near the Costa Coffee. One must leave on time to get the airport. Good wifi, friendly staff and lines at security check weren't too long
- Rahul Waslekar

★★★☆☆
I was a kind of late, so accidentally I ran to the wrong part of the airport. There was not enought signs for me. However I yould ask other crew members and they could help (luckily).

★★★★★
Very nice cozy little airport with good facilities and processes. Christmas time in transit area was enjoyable.

★☆☆☆☆
gate 16 to warsaw is outside of the airport, in a metal hangar, you have to walk outside of teh actual buidling with shops/restaurants/toilets and go to a hangar with no toiltes and no seats (8 seast for the whole line of ppl waiting for each plane)!!! half of that time you queuing oustide in the cold/rain.snow.This is laughable. We didnt get to use the toilets as there were none in there and we thought we were just gping to a regular gate. Security took forever. Some people randomly were let into the queue in front of us 3 of them, not traveling together). Why???they also had baggage and jackets to take off.
- Auri

★★★★★
Well in this instance I was arriving to Budapest Airport, and while it was a bit crowded after my immediate arrival that was understandable, as to be honest many flight to or from the UK have been delayed today, and even if they could, they haven't been able to help the sheer amount of people arriving from various destinations at the same time. Other than that, it was my home airport for 20 years, and all of the time it was a pleasant experience to arrive, or depart from here.
- Mark Szutor

★☆☆☆☆
Very small airport There is no chairs to sit.No wifi and only one small caffee in the corner. To get ther you must to change subway to bus.
- Sławek68

★★★☆☆
When you fly with a low cost carrier, don't go to early to the 'gate' because the terminal for low cost carriers is crap
