It is the primary airport of NE England and has one 2,329 meter asphalt runway where 50,688 aircraft movements took place in 2019. In addition to freight, mail and corporate flights, over 5 million passengers passed through the terminal doors in 2019.
NCL began as a grass runway with a hanger in 1935, but in 1967, a new runway and terminal were constructed, as well as a new air traffic control tower.
