Melbourne Airport (IATA: MEL, ICAO: YMML), is an airport serving the Melbourne area in Australia. Scroll down or click here to see what Melbourne Airport shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, and facilities we have in our Duty Free Information 2022 Database. Currently in our database we have information on 59 shops, 12 cafes, and 27 restaurants at Melbourne Airport. If you believe this data is out of date or incorrect in any way, please contact us and we will get our team of researchers to correct our data.

This airport has two asphalt runways. One is 2,286 meters and one is 3,657 meters long. There were 234,789 aircraft movements in 2020-2021, and 35 million passengers went through the gates in 2016-2017. It has four terminals with more than 55 gates and parking bays. It is Australia’s second busiest airport.

MEL opened its doors in 1970 when the current local airport was unable to handle any more traffic or the size of the new wide-body jets. The first Boeing 747 arrived at MEL in 1971, which meant more international airlines and flights could be scheduled. By 1988, the airport needed to expand again, so they added the fourth terminal, which now handles budget airlines and low-cost flights. The double-decker Airbus A380 arrived in 2005 after the airport made runway adjustments to handle it. It was the first Australian airport that the A380 could use.

Parking is plentiful, but they recommend that you book online to guarantee you a spot. Ground transportation options include buses, taxis, chauffeurs, ride-share apps and rental cars.

How far away is Melbourne Airport from from the centre of Melbourne?

It takes approximately 25 mins to drive the 14.3 mi (23 kilometres) between the centre of Melbourne and Melbourne Airport, making it accessible enough to facilitate and accommodate any travel plans. Make sure you arrive in time to take the opportunity to explore the duty-free shopping opportunities located inside MEL airport, where you can purchase exclusive perfumes and colognes, cigarattes, alcohol, food items, confectionery, and souvenirs from Australia.

What are the parking options at Melbourne Airport?

External parking options are available. Don't forget that you can also opt to leave your car at home, thanks to the many public transportation alternatives that can take you to and from Melbourne Airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Melbourne Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 39 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 59 different shops around Melbourne Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

What airlines operate passenger services out of Melbourne Airport?

The following airlines all fly passenger services out of Melbourne Airport:

Melbourne Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
My home airport, plenty of shopping and restaurants. Free WiFi is of decent speed. Check in is always orderly and the lines move fairly fast. The biggest thing that lets Melbourne Airport down is the transport to the airport. There is no rail link, and one main freeway that can become choked with traffic. There is a frequent shuttle bus, but it is expensive.
- Metro Man

★★★☆☆
Surly and unhelpful security staff. Queued for clearance only to be told to fill in an "orange" form, which turned-out to be green, and was only available by returning to the back of the queue! Together with the convoluted route via duty-free, and a long walk to the furthest gate, led to a rushed boarding, this being on a quiet day.
- Howard Williams

★★★☆☆
Melbourne Domestic. No hand-luggage, and online check-in, meant swift loading eventually, very long walk to furthest gate.
- Howard Williams

★★☆☆☆
Arrived 10 hours late, took 90 minutes to claim baggage, as we were the only active flight at the airport.
- Howard Williams

★☆☆☆☆
MEL is an absolute disgrace and a national embarrassment - period. Parking is the most expensive in the developed world! No train, get real Victoria, many "so called third world countries" have better transport to their main airports. Pay for luggage trolleys, completely outrageous! Air Bus service is WAY TOO expensive, trumped up to be something wonderful, but barely second rate. We now actively avoid Melbourne because of the airport ans associated services.
- Mark Withers

★★★☆☆
No rail link, but good long term carparking with regular shuttle buses to the terminals. Terminal ok but could use a face lift. One of the longest waits for baggage collection and immigration and customs can get very busy I have taken an hour and 45 min to get through at times.
- Cameron Bull

★★★★☆
Quick airport, quick immigration, food is decent, can catch a tram or bus to the airport. Decent airport
- Flynn Cernoy

★★★★☆
only thing did not liked the walk to T4 the new Jetstar dedicated terminal , you need to allow sufficient time to reach your gate , they should have enough carts to carry pregnant ladies and families with young ones . Also luggage trolley needs to be paid $4??? Australia is probably be the only country charging for getting your luggage through the trolley
- kunal singh

★★★☆☆
Under renovation so food outlets were lacking after going through customs checks. one plus though was there was plenty of opportunity to purchase bottled water for consumption on the flight. Had trouble connecting to wifi. Rail link to airport would be handy
- Cameron Bull

★★★★☆
Straight through immigration after collecting the epass really quite a good system once you are familiar with it. bags were waiting for us on the carousel, but the line for customs was huge again. although it moved quickly it is frustrating as it is the last thing before getting home. The line weaves through and among the baggage carousels adding to congestion. meating area as you leave customs is always congested so ensure you go the right direction while behind the rail to save having to push through the crowd to go back the other way.
