Deze luchthaven heeft twee asfaltbanen. Eén is 2.286 meter en één is 3.657 meter lang. Er waren 234.789 vliegtuigbewegingen in 2020-2021, en 35 miljoen passagiers gingen door de gates in 2016-2017. Het heeft vier terminals met meer dan 55 gates en parkeerplaatsen. Het is de tweede drukste luchthaven van Australië.
MEL opende zijn deuren in 1970 toen de huidige lokale luchthaven niet meer verkeer of de grootte van de nieuwe breedrompvliegtuigen aankon. De eerste Boeing 747 arriveerde op MEL in 1971, waardoor meer internationale luchtvaartmaatschappijen en vluchten gepland konden worden. In 1988 moest de luchthaven opnieuw uitbreiden, dus werd de vierde terminal toegevoegd, die nu budgetmaatschappijen en goedkope vluchten afhandelt. De dubbeldekker Airbus A380 arriveerde in 2005 nadat de luchthaven de landingsbaan had aangepast om hem aan te kunnen. Het was de eerste Australische luchthaven die de A380 kon gebruiken.
