This airport has two asphalt runways. One is 2,286 meters and one is 3,657 meters long. There were 234,789 aircraft movements in 2020-2021, and 35 million passengers went through the gates in 2016-2017. It has four terminals with more than 55 gates and parking bays. It is Australia’s second busiest airport.
MEL opened its doors in 1970 when the current local airport was unable to handle any more traffic or the size of the new wide-body jets. The first Boeing 747 arrived at MEL in 1971, which meant more international airlines and flights could be scheduled. By 1988, the airport needed to expand again, so they added the fourth terminal, which now handles budget airlines and low-cost flights. The double-decker Airbus A380 arrived in 2005 after the airport made runway adjustments to handle it. It was the first Australian airport that the A380 could use.
Parking is plentiful, but they recommend that you book online to guarantee you a spot. Ground transportation options include buses, taxis, chauffeurs, ride-share apps and rental cars.
