This airport has one 3,048-meter concrete runway and one 3,050 meter concrete/grooved asphalt runway that saw over 6 million passengers from 63,316 aircraft movements in 2020. This number of passengers is down significantly from its normal 29.3 million travelers.

MAN was opened in 1938, and during WWII, parachutists trained at the airport. After the war, the airport returned to civilian flights. Air France started flying out of the airport in 1946 and continues to fly there to date. By 1953, the airport was able to operate 24 hours, and MAN’s first transatlantic flight happened in 1963. There were 2 million passengers by 1971, and by 2010, it was prepared to handle the Airbus A380. There are three terminals and a VIP terminal.

All three terminals have multistory parking decks to accommodate long- and short-term parking. Ground transportation includes trains, buses and rental cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Manchester Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 23 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 66 different shops around Manchester Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

What airlines operate passenger services out of Manchester Airport?

The following airlines all fly passenger services out of Manchester Airport:

Duty Free Allowance at Manchester Airport

If you are travelling to United Kingdom from a country within the EU, then you can bring in an unlimited amount of goods that you have bought in that country as long as the price you paid included tax and the goods are for your own personal use (this also includes items that you intend to be gifts).

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Manchester Airport from inside the EU

Despite there not being a limit on the amount of alcoholic and tobacco goods that you can bring in from a country in the EU, if you have goods that are more than the following guidelines, then there is a good chance that you will be questioned by a Customs Officer about what you intend to do with the goods:

  • 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, or 1 kg of tobacco
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 20 litres of fortified wine

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Manchester Airport from outside the EU

If you are entering United Kingdom from a country outside of the EU, then your allowance changes to the amounts listed below. Again, these must be for your own personal use. If you intend to sell the goods or if you go over these allowances, then you may have to pay duty and/or tax).

  • 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • 4 litres of still wine
  • 1 litre of alcohol over 22% volume or 2 litres of alcohol less than 22% volume
  • 16 litres of beer
  • up to £390 worth of all other goods
Manchester Airport Reviews

★★★☆☆
Showing signs of age and too small to cope - a big development is on the way! Security is a nightmare, and the staff are not coping well. Inconsistent with their standards and I saw another passenger getting quite unpleasant (and uncalled for) treatment.
- Jeremy Betteridge

★★★★★
Manchester Airport was a very good airport with many facility's and airport shops; The security check was very quick and well organized. I recommend using jet parks because you can easily park and get a shuttle bus to the airport (Booking essential via Holiday Exras or the airports website)
- Jack Frank

★★★☆☆
The security queue on Saturday morning was way too long (1h30) and almost made us miss our flight...
- Luca

★★★★★
this airport is the best airport i have been too the immigration are a problem to the airport due too long queue the shops restaurants ETC are really good
- rocco corbett

★★★★★
Very easy terminal to navigate, just make sure you have enough time to get through security as it does get quite busy in the morning rush. Nothing out of the ordinary though.
- Jordan Naylor

★★★★☆
T3 always seems the nicest to travel through. T3 Escape lounge, is very nice with view across the runway.
- Christopher Day

★☆☆☆☆
Worst airport I've ever transited through. The business lounge that SQ contracts with does not measure up to SQ standards--no shower or hot food options.
- Christopher Harris

★☆☆☆☆
As usual Manchester is a tip, no decent free wifi, toilets not clean and no water fountains. Security queues too long, only decent thing was check-in was quick as there was no-one else there besides me - check-in staff very courteous though.
- Mr M

★☆☆☆☆
One of the worst airports, on arrival queue for immigration was a mile long or at least it seemed like it - took twenty+ minutes to get through. Charges for trolleys and everything else they can think of - a dump.
- Mr M

★★☆☆☆
This is my former UK home airport - but they are purely interested in ca$h over customer experience. On the plus side it's very easy to get to, but then car parking when needed, is extortionate. The worst part is without doubt security: it's is a complete joke. Even if you go through fast track. It is unbelievably slow whether leaving or returning - and the agents are VERY grumpy too. Not a smile in sight. Having been thru security, you are then forced to navigate through the duty free maze to wait in an overcrowded departures. The lounges are fine though. I have travelled through many airports equally as busy as EGCC and wait times are nothing like as bad. Sad to say, but my former home airport really shows up as being complete excrement by comparison. Sort it out Manchester.
