Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is the largest airport in the state of Hawai’i, located on the island of Oahu. This busy airport serves as a hub for Hawaiian Airlines and also services domestic and international carriers such as Japan Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, China Eastern Airline and many more. HNL is just 4 miles northwest of downtown Honolulu and less than 2 miles from Waikiki Beach. It houses three terminals – Terminal 1 for interisland flights within Hawaii; Terminal 2 for international flights; and Commuter Terminal for regional airlines.
At HNL, passengers can enjoy its many amenities such as pet relief areas with patches of grass and a fire hydrant; an outdoor yoga garden where patrons can practice yoga moves while surrounded by lush plants; the Halau Marketplace that offers convenience items like snacks, beverages, souvenirs and newspapers; a fitness center offering showers, lockers and day use rooms; multiple dining options throughout the terminals ranging from fast-food to sit down restaurants; free Wi-Fi access throughout all terminals; ATMs located in each terminal; charging stations for electronic devices scattered across the terminals; nursing suites equipped with private seating area to accommodate mothers who need to breastfeed or express milk in privacy.
The airport has gone through a series of renovations over time to keep up with its growing number of traveler arrivals. Most recently in 2019, construction began on a new 35-gate concourse which is expected to open by 2022. Additionally, two Interisland Concourses have been remodeled with modernized gate areas and additional amenities like food outlets. The upgrades are projected to significantly reduce congestion at peak times so passengers can get around faster and smoother than ever before.
When it comes to getting around HNL there are several transportation options available including rental cars, taxi service, shuttle buses operated by Roberts Hawaii Express Shuttle & Limousine Service as well as TheBus public bus system serving Oahu’s neighborhoods. A parking lot is also conveniently located near Terminals 1 & 2 with hourly rates starting at $2 per hour up to $25 per day for long term parking. There’s also valet parking service available starting at $35 per day for short term users or $20 for longterm users.
With thousands of travelers passing through daily from all over the world Honolulu International Airport continues to be one of Hawaii’s busiest airports contributing greatly towards tourism industry in the state since 1927 when Charles Lindbergh landed his plane christening it ‘Hawaii’s first airfield’.
