This airport has one 2,665 grooved asphalt runway that saw 8.8 million passengers and 86,226 aircraft movements in 2019. That makes it Scotland’s second-busiest airport. Over 15 airlines use Glasgow Airport. Many of the flights are seasonal to and from destinations like Barcelona, Halifax and Naples.

GLA began in 1932, and the RAF used it to house its Auxiliary Air Force. It was home to a torpedo training unit in 1940 and was a naval base in 1943. The navy left in 1963, but by this time, Glasgow realized it needed an airport for civilian use. In the 1990s, GLA was the first U.K. airport to screen all of the baggage that went through the doors due to the Lockerbie bombing. The RAF continues to use this airport as a base.

Short- and long-term parking is available, as well as valet parking. One lot is closest to the terminal, and the others are either a short walk or serviced by shuttle buses. Ground transportation includes buses, trains and taxis. There is bicycle parking at the lots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Glasgow Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 13 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 27 different shops around Glasgow Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

Duty Free Allowance at Glasgow Airport

If you are travelling to United Kingdom from a country within the EU, then you can bring in an unlimited amount of goods that you have bought in that country as long as the price you paid included tax and the goods are for your own personal use (this also includes items that you intend to be gifts).

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Glasgow Airport from inside the EU

Despite there not being a limit on the amount of alcoholic and tobacco goods that you can bring in from a country in the EU, if you have goods that are more than the following guidelines, then there is a good chance that you will be questioned by a Customs Officer about what you intend to do with the goods:

  • 800 cigarettes, 200 cigars, or 1 kg of tobacco
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 20 litres of fortified wine

What are the limits on duty free cigarettes/alcohol at Glasgow Airport from outside the EU

If you are entering United Kingdom from a country outside of the EU, then your allowance changes to the amounts listed below. Again, these must be for your own personal use. If you intend to sell the goods or if you go over these allowances, then you may have to pay duty and/or tax).

  • 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • 4 litres of still wine
  • 1 litre of alcohol over 22% volume or 2 litres of alcohol less than 22% volume
  • 16 litres of beer
  • up to £390 worth of all other goods

Glasgow airport is a great choice for travelers very low ques lots of shops gate areas are well sign posted, also 3peirs easyjet and loganair domestic, domestic for flybe and ba and international tho ryanair depart from gate51 no matter of destination. Always my first choice

★☆☆☆☆
Glasgow Airport is terrible, it needs done up, more shops and nicer staff. I didn't get free WiFi and you are forced to walk through duty-free. The toilets were a mess and smelt. There wasn't enough seats after security and the wait was horrendous at security, waited in excess of 30 minutes. When we asked why we got no answer, just said they would try their best, they clearly were not.
- Goofy99

★★☆☆☆
It's an OK little airport but certainly lacking against the bigger ones like Changi. The facilities are very few as are the food and shopping. Saving grace is the staff are friendly most of the time which is something lacking in other UK airports. Overall a solid 2 star airport
- Chris McCulloch

★★★★☆
GLA is undergoing constant improvement as is always getting better. Airport looks modern both inside and out, with the exception of some gates on the central and east peirs which look a little outdated. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Security is always flawless and even at peak times is very quick. Shops and restaurants are good but there are many more being added. Departures is spacious and offers good views over the aprons. WiFi is lacking behind other UK airports with only 30 minutes free. Overall, a very efficient airport with excellent connectivity and ever-expanding route network.

★★★★★
Nice and cosy airport. Not too big but with a good variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Views over the platforms are perfect, there is something to see while waiting. Signing and routing is ok.
- Marco

★★★★★
Pleasant experience at Glasgow airport, plenty shops, bars and restaurants for being a smaller airport.
- Jenna McDonald

★★★★★
It's Glasgow domestic arrivals. What more needs to be said? Off the plane, collected baggage and into the car within 15 minutes.
- Robbie Mathieson

★★★★★
Great airport, fast check in and no queue at security every time I use it. Very clean and helpful staff. Lounge is great and free wifi is available throughout airport. Only improvement needed is the amount of shops/ restaurants as there is a lack of choice.
