Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) is located 8 km northwest of Berlin’s city center in the district of Reinickendorf. It is the largest airport in Germany, handling almost 26 million passengers annually. Tegel Airport was originally built as a military airbase in 1936, but it was soon expanded to serve civilian flights. During the Cold War, it served as a major hub for East Germany’s national airline Interflug and other airlines from socialist countries. The airport continued to grow after German reunification, with most of its expansion taking place between 1994 and 2006. In 2020 it finally closed its doors for good following the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
Tegel Airport covers an area of over 3 square kilometers and has four passenger terminals – A, B, C, and D – which are connected by a central building containing shops, restaurants, and a large information desk. All gates have jet bridges that allow passengers to board aircraft without being exposed to the elements outside. There are also two runways at Tegel: runway 08R/26L (3,000 m long) and runway 08L/26R (2,710 m long). Both are equipped with state-of-the-art instrument landing systems that enable aircraft to land safely even during bad weather conditions.
The airport offers a wide range of services for both departing and arriving passengers including banking services; 24-hour pharmacies; luggage storage; car rental services; several eateries offering local specialties; duty free shopping; VIP lounges where travelers can relax before their flight; tourist information offices providing maps and advice about getting around Berlin; special assistance for disabled passengers; medical assistance; childcare services for families traveling with young children; and several internet kiosks located throughout the terminals.
Tegel is served by some of the world’s major airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France-KLM Group, United Airlines and Turkish Airlines amongst others. As well as being connected to cities within Germany itself such as Frankfurt am Main, Munich or Hamburg there are direct international connections from Tegel Airport to destinations all over Europe as well as North America, Africa and Asia Pacific countries like Japan or China. Furthermore Berlin public transportation system links Tegel Airport with various parts of town via buses or underground lines meaning you can get easily wherever you need within minutes!
