Shannon Airport is located in County Clare, Ireland and is the country’s third busiest airport. The Airport was established in 1945, making it the oldest civilian international airport in Europe. It was also the first airport to control transatlantic air traffic between North America and Europe. Shannon Airport serves over two million passengers each year, with regular direct flights to the United States and Canada. Additionally, it provides charter services to various popular holiday destinations including Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy.
The main terminal building offers a range of facilities for passengers such as restaurants, bars and shopping outlets. Business travellers will find Executive Lounges available with complimentary WiFi access and refreshments. There is also a Duty Free shop onsite offering travelers the chance to pick up a variety of souvenirs before their flight. Getting to Shannon Airport is easy; there are ample parking spaces available with free short-term parking available for up to 15 minutes. A range of transport options are available including local bus routes and taxi services operating from outside the arrivals hall.
Shannon Airport has held an important role in aviation history since its opening in 1945: it was originally owned by the Irish government but eventually transferred into private ownership at the turn of the millennium as part of a privatization drive by then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2001. During its time under government ownership, Shannon saw numerous innovations which were not only important for Irish aviation but advancements which were adopted around the world too – these included introducing air traffic control via radar systems, becoming one of only two airports worldwide to handle both civil and military aircraft simultaneously during World War II as well as being one of the first airports on earth to use Instrument Landing Systems (ILS).
Today, Shannon Airport continues its role as an important gateway linking Ireland with Europe, North America and beyond. It has become increasingly popular among tourists who are looking for quick access to explore sites like Bunratty Castle or Cliffs of Moher; indeed Shannon’s convenient location makes it easy for visitors from all around Ireland or abroad alike to take advantage of all that County Clare has to offer within a short distance from their departure point!
