RTM was opened in 1956 after Rotterdam’s original airport was destroyed during WWII. In the 1990s, passenger traffic increased, saving the airport from destruction. Between 2010 and 2019, passenger traffic doubled after two other local airports closed that provided service to The Hague and the International Criminal Court. In 2019, over 2 million passengers went through the gates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

Rotterdam The Hague Airport Reviews

★★★☆☆
Long queue at customs
- Sander

★★★★★
Small, but good and efficient airport. No queue for security and friendly staff. Aircraft departed on time.
- Reyno Nieuwelink

★★★★☆
Very easy to get their by car; not so easy by public transport unless you live really close to the Central Station (e.g. from my place it's 12min by car vs 64min by public transport). Fast check-in and security, friendly staff. Good waiting area, with soft chairs and armchairs. Very limited choice of food but then, you're not going to the airport for food, right? :)
- Galya Petrenko

★★★★★
Ideal airport, no distance at all, efficient staff, fluent boarding (not a wonder considering the low ocupation), on-time departure. Terminal facilities basic, but has all the esentials for a regional airport and the destinations served are more than just from a regional airport. Did not use the wifi, but it's probably not free and that's a pity. Only negative point is reaching it in public transport from The Hague, changing in Rotterdam onto a bus.
- None available

★★★★☆
love this airport, very cute and simple. once you're in the airport it's very simple to rent a car, or to check in. the airport has got beautiful wood on the floor, what i never seen again in an airport. it's very simple it has one restaurant and 2 shops, it's very very small but has everything you need.

Rotterdam The Hague - Zestienhoven Airport is the closest airport to my house. Used te be short check in times, short waiting times, but times are changing. Time for security check, immigration, baggage claim is too long for such a small airport.
- Rick Verstrate

★★★★☆
SMALL BUT VERY GOOD PASSANGER FRIENDLY AIRPORT. QUICK CHECK-IN AND SECURITY CHECK, CLEAN AND NOT OVER CROWDED, WELL STOCKED BOOKSTORE, GOOD SHOPPING FACILITIES .ABOVE ALL FRIENDLY AND SMILING STAFF.. YOU JUST WALK TO THE AIRCRAFT LIKE IN THE GOOD OLD TIMES.NO NEED TO SAY THAT LONG WAITING LINES DO NOT EXIST. GOOD REASON TO AVOID SCHIPOL AIRPORT.. THE ONLY DRAW BACK IS, IF YOU USE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT, THE AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE FROM MAIJERSPLEIN METRO STATION(BUS NO.50). SOMETIMES IT IS UNRELIABLE. THE BSET IS TO TAKE BUS NO33 FROM ROTTEDAM CENTRAL STATION.SLOW BUT REGULAR EVERY 15 MINUTES .
- Miles Cara

★★★★★
Very convenient located near the highway. Parking your car is easy, however quite expensive. Security check was a pleasure: holiday traffic is separated from business travellers. Food services sufficient for an airport of this size.
- Marco

★★☆☆☆
bad informations on delays, you can just guess when you're flight will start. if there are many delays facilities are too small for so many people
- jizza

★★★★★
