RTM was opened in 1956 after Rotterdam’s original airport was destroyed during WWII. For 30-plus years, the airport was under threat of closure due to a housing expansion in the area and a low passenger count. In the 1990s, passenger traffic increased, saving the airport from destruction. Between 2010 and 2019, passenger traffic doubled after two other local airports closed that provided service to The Hague and the International Criminal Court. In 2019, over 2 million passengers went through the gates.
