O. R. Tambo International Airport (IATA: JNB, ICAO: FAOR) (ORTIA) is a major international airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa, near the city of Johannesburg. It serves as the primary airport for domestic and international travel to/from South Africa and is Africa’s busiest airport with a capacity to handle up to 28 million passengers annually with non-stop flights to all continents except Antarctica. The airport is the hub of South Africa’s largest international and domestic carrier, South African Airways (SAA), and a number of smaller local airlines. The airport handled a total of 18 million passengers in 2014.

It was originally known as Jan Smuts International Airport (hence the airport’s former ICAO code, “FAJS”), after South Africa’s former prime minister of that name. The airport was renamed Johannesburg International Airport in 1994 when the newly reformed South African government implemented a national policy of not naming airports after politicians. The policy was however reversed later, and the airport renamed again on 27 October 2006 after Oliver Tambo, a former President of the African National Congress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

OR Tambo Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
Slow baggage claim.
- Lauri Koost

★★★★★
Cheap yet good food. Not too busy. Big airport yet easy to get around. Easiest check in I have ever done. Flights on time and people nice. Modern and clean halls. Trolleys are easy to push around and taxi's are cheap getting to the airport
- Mason

★★★★☆
I think Johannesburg Airport is one of the best airports in Africa, because everything went so quick. I arrived three hours before my flight (because I thought in Africa everything is a bit slower), but the Check-in and the security check took me only 15 minutes and so I had a long time to look around. And finely also boarding was very quick!
- Philipp Jampen

★★☆☆☆
TV Screen on seat 42K was not working. It displayed white. Asked crew member to reset it, and no response. Crew member did not get back to me on the request. Asked another crew member, and still no response. By the time the cabin lights were dimmed, I put a blanket over the TV screen to close it up as the white from the screen was disturbing.
- Igmar Grewar

★★★★☆
JNB is a pretty good airport, they have free carts which are rare at airports these days. The airport is quite large with international on one side and domestic on the other. Check in is not so bad. I paid for the BidVest lounge which was small and left a lot to be desired. Food consisted of crackers.
- David

★★★☆☆
nice aeroport, indications are found easely, stuff is welcoming, flight are ponctuel, areport is clean and you have many fast food to eat in any moment I will come back...I will come back...I will come back
- BEN ABDALLAH

★★★★☆
I was very pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness, facilities and organisation at JNB. On the downside, boarding for flight from JNB-SYD was a chaotic shambles
- Peter Withiel

★★★★★
Among the nicest and most modern international airports. Extensive duty free shopping opportunities and several good places to eat, many with excellent views of the runways.
- Eric Schoennauer

★★★★☆
The BA lounge here is pretty good. The choice of food for dinner was very good, and the range of drinks was also welcome. The lounge has a large number of power sockets scattered around with both UK and European/US configurations supported. There were no major issues with security or passport control, and so far, it has been a pretty reasonable trip.
- Chris Reardon

★★★★☆
A fine airport but staff coming to help with luggage feels intrusive since they're expecting you to tip, even if you're a foreigner with no small money to give.
