Horta Airport (also known as João Paulo II Airport) is an international airport located in Horta, Azores, Portugal. It is one of the busiest airports in the archipelago and serves both domestic and international flights. The airport has two terminals – Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights.
Horta Airport has a direct connection to Lisbon and other cities in mainland Portugal, making it a major gateway for islanders looking to travel outside their country. The airport also offers regular connections to several European countries like Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy, among others. In addition, there are charter flights that depart from here regularly to various destinations around the world.
The facilities at Horta Airport include duty-free shops which offer travelers duty-free products such as alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics; food outlets; car rental services; currency exchange desks; ATMs; wheelchair access and assistance; luggage storage facilities; baby changing rooms; free Wi-Fi internet access throughout the airport terminal buildings; prayer rooms; medical clinic and an observation deck with stunning views of Faial Island.
The airport is managed by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal (national airport authority). With its modern infrastructure, attentive service personnel and user-friendly facilities, Horta Airport has become one of the most popular airports in Portugal for both local and foreign travelers alike.
In 2018 alone, more than 872 thousand passengers passed through Horta Airport making it one of the busiest airports in Portugal after Porto Santo Island Airport—the busiest on the Azores Islands. In order to satisfy this demand for air travel services, a number of airlines have increased their presence at the airport over recent years including Azorean Airlines (SATA), Ryanair and TAP Air Portugal whose flights cover major hubs across Europe.
Furthermore, due to its strategic position close to several important ports like Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island or Velas on Santa Maria Island as well as cruise lines offering trips between these ports on a regular basis—allowing visitors to explore multiple islands within a short amount of time—Horta Airport presents itself as an ideal option for those looking to enjoy some amazing sightseeing opportunities during their stay in the Azores Archipelago.
