Haikou Meilan Airport’s Duty Free shop is adding 18,000sqm of retail space as they unveil the new Haikou Aviation Tourism Plaza early next year.
A spokesman for Haikou Meilan Duty Free Shop said: “As one of the most important parts of the Haikou Aviation Tourism Plaza and with the expansion area of the Haikou Meilan Airport Duty-Free Shop, [the additional space] is channelled with the existing duty free area within the airport through a specified access, interconnecting the passenger flows.”
The development was due to complete in 2016, but this has now been pushed back to the first quarter of 2017. The extra retail space will be necessary as passenger traffic at Haikou Meilan Airport is expecting to surge to 30,000,000 by 2020 and then 47,000,000 by 2030.
Haikou Meilan Duty Free Shop added in a statement: “The expansion of the duty free business area marks the next stage of the development. We have a rigorous attitude to creating a well-known international airport duty-free shop brand, and to carry forward the offshore duty free shop policy.”
Haikou Meilan International Airport is the largest airport in Hainan, but the 2nd busiest (21st busiest busiest airport in China with 10,696,585 passengers in 2012).
