Keflavik Airport is the international airport of Iceland, located 50 km southwest of Reykjavik. Built in 1948, it has seen extensive growth over the years as Iceland has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination. It is currently the largest airport in Iceland and serves as a hub for many domestic, European, and transatlantic flights. In 2019, Keflavik Airport handled more than 8 million passengers and saw over 40 thousand air traffic movements.
Keflavik Airport was originally built to serve the US military base at nearby Naval Air Station Keflavik during the Cold War era. After American forces withdrew from Iceland in 2006, the US government signed an agreement with Icelandic authorities to transfer control of half of the former base to the Icelandic government in order to use it as an international airport.
The airport has two terminals – Terminal 1 serving short-haul flights and terminal 2 dedicated to long-haul flights – connected by a free shuttle service. In addition to its domestic connections, Keflavík Airport also offers direct routes to destinations across Europe and North America. The most popular airlines operating out of Keflavík are Wow Air, Atlantic Airways and WOW Airlines. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Keflavík became carbon neutral in 2020 by investing in renewable energy sources such as wind power and geothermal energy for all airports operations.
Keflavík Airport is well equipped with facilities for passengers’ convenience. There are several restaurants offering local cuisine as well as outlets selling duty-free goods, souvenirs and other items related to travel; these also include currency exchanges and ATMs located within both terminals.. A selection of car rental companies are available at both terminals; many offer discounts when booked online prior to arrival at the airport. To help pass time while waiting for flights there are also various amenities such as free Wi-Fi access throughout both terminals, along with comfortable seating areas where passengers can relax before their journey begins or ends.
In addition to its passenger facilities, Keflavík also offers state-of-the-art cargo handling services including storage areas suitable for aircrafts up to Boeing 747 size; refrigeration units; warehousing with forklift trucks on site; X-ray equipment for security control; animal inspection areas; postal offices; import/export freight forwarding services; customs clearance documents; aircraft maintenance workshops plus an aircraft wash facility available onsite 24 hours a day for complete aircraft cleaning services which meet industry standards..
Keflavík Airport continues to be one of Iceland’s most important transportation hubs connecting people from all around the world since 1948 – making it one of Europe’s oldest airports still in operation today!
