Keflavik Airport is the international airport of Iceland, located 50 km southwest of Reykjavik. Built in 1948, it has seen extensive growth over the years as Iceland has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination. It is currently the largest airport in Iceland and serves as a hub for many domestic, European, and transatlantic flights. In 2019, Keflavik Airport handled more than 8 million passengers and saw over 40 thousand air traffic movements.

Keflavik Airport was originally built to serve the US military base at nearby Naval Air Station Keflavik during the Cold War era. After American forces withdrew from Iceland in 2006, the US government signed an agreement with Icelandic authorities to transfer control of half of the former base to the Icelandic government in order to use it as an international airport.

The airport has two terminals – Terminal 1 serving short-haul flights and terminal 2 dedicated to long-haul flights – connected by a free shuttle service. In addition to its domestic connections, Keflavík Airport also offers direct routes to destinations across Europe and North America. The most popular airlines operating out of Keflavík are Wow Air, Atlantic Airways and WOW Airlines. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Keflavík became carbon neutral in 2020 by investing in renewable energy sources such as wind power and geothermal energy for all airports operations.

Keflavík Airport is well equipped with facilities for passengers’ convenience. There are several restaurants offering local cuisine as well as outlets selling duty-free goods, souvenirs and other items related to travel; these also include currency exchanges and ATMs located within both terminals.. A selection of car rental companies are available at both terminals; many offer discounts when booked online prior to arrival at the airport. To help pass time while waiting for flights there are also various amenities such as free Wi-Fi access throughout both terminals, along with comfortable seating areas where passengers can relax before their journey begins or ends.

In addition to its passenger facilities, Keflavík also offers state-of-the-art cargo handling services including storage areas suitable for aircrafts up to Boeing 747 size; refrigeration units; warehousing with forklift trucks on site; X-ray equipment for security control; animal inspection areas; postal offices; import/export freight forwarding services; customs clearance documents; aircraft maintenance workshops plus an aircraft wash facility available onsite 24 hours a day for complete aircraft cleaning services which meet industry standards..

Keflavík Airport continues to be one of Iceland’s most important transportation hubs connecting people from all around the world since 1948 – making it one of Europe’s oldest airports still in operation today!

Keflavík Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
Travelling as a group of students, many of whom had not flown on their own before, check in was by far the worst part of the return journey home. We were forced to use self-service check in; - there were no passenger service assistants on hand to assist with the usage of the machines; - several machines either didn't a) ask whether baggage tags were required or b) didn't print the request baggage tags; - many people were not sure oh how to correctly fit the baggage tags due to lack of instructions or assistance. Other than check in, although there was a slight queue at security and a reasonable walk to gate 26, it was a smooth transfer from bag drop to the plane.
- Harry Sugden

★★★★☆
Very good airport sitting in the lounge was good but the shops are really expensive. Getting to the terminal and getting around was easy everything was marked and we got to our gate easily boarding the plane was okay too! Airport Rating 4.5/5 :)
- Hinrik Jónsson

★★★★★
Amazing airport! I was very surprised, how all the facilities in such small airport could be this great. There were very kind people in the security check and after that, we had a nice meal in one of the shops. You won't get bored there! There are many opportunities to kill time. Free wifi, comfortable chairs with electricity, also for USB.
- Ludmila Borosova

★★★☆☆
Transferring only, no immigration/customs or security. Holding area for 5 US bound flights was a small area with less than 20 seats. Area was also part of some building works. No time to check out food outlets but toilets where high end for an airport.
- Alan Graham

★★★☆☆
Keflavik gets very busy during Icelandair banks and seems overcrowded with no place to sit. Otherwise a very nice little/big airport.
- Jocelyn Roy

★★★☆☆
Not a bad airport, but is starting to become severely overcrowded - there were a lot of people sat on the floor and when you arrive, you walk through the departures lounge.
- Joe Tarbuck

★★☆☆☆
Must take bus to airport - 40 min. Took 2 hrs to check in, very slow. Once at gate, all 3 intl departures left at the same time and there was no room, almost everyone was standing.
- Amanda

★★★☆☆
Nice little airport, very cool! More food options needed especially when departing out of the upper gates.
- Dan Stroehlein

★★★★★
An absolute breeze to get through despite construction work. Has to be the quickest security i've ever experienced.
- Joseph Wildman

★★☆☆☆
Pro: easy getting to the airport if you use a Taxi. Con: -Most of the Departures to Europe at the same time in the morning..so the little Terminal is overcrowded. - Staff at security is very rude and unfriendly -everything is overpriced, like all of iceland
