Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (IATA: DTW, ICAO: KDTW), usually called Detroit Metro Airport, Metro Airport locally, or simply DTW, is a major international airport in the United States covering 4,850 acres (1,960 ha) in Romulus, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It is Michigan’s busiest airport, and one of the largest air transportation hubs in the country.

The airport is Delta Air Lines‘ second-largest hub in terms of daily flights. Detroit serves as the primary gateway to Asia for the Eastern United States for Delta and is also the third-busiest gateway to Europe for the airline. The airport is a major gateway for tourism in metropolitan Detroit and is one of SkyTeam’s major Midwestern hubs. It is also the second-largest hub for Spirit Airlines and is a major connecting point between the Eastern and the Western United States. Operated by the Wayne County Airport Authority, the airport has four major runways and two crosswind runways, two terminals, 129 in-service gates, and an on-site Westin Hotel and conference center connected to the A concourse. Detroit Metropolitan Airport has maintenance facilities capable of servicing and repairing aircraft as large as the Boeing 747-400.

In terms of aircraft operations (takeoffs and landings), it remains one of the ten busiest airfields in North America. Metro Airport also serves the Toledo, Ohio, area, approximately 40 miles (64 km) south of the airport, and the city of Windsor, Ontario and Southwestern Ontario in nearby Canada. The airport serves over 140 destinations and was named the best large U.S. airport in customer satisfaction by J.D. Power & Associates in 2010.

Frequently Asked Questions

Duty free shopping is when you can purchase goods that have had the duty/tax (usually taxes like import, VAT, and sales tax) waivered by the government, therefore reducing the prices that you would normally expect to pay in a standard shop or website. Duty free shops are usually found at airports or sea terminals, but you can also sometimes purchase duty free goods during international flights or on cruises.

Anyone travelling internationally (between two different countries) is eligible to purchase duty free items.

The term 'duty' refers to the tax that you pay if you bring a product from one country to another. i.e. if you bought some perfume in the United Kingdom, and then flew to Germany you might have to pay tax in both countries. Most governments do not charge the duty on products bought when you are leaving that country, which means that the customer doesn't have to pay the tax twice. This usually only applies when you are leaving the country, i.e. it is for export purposes only.

As the price for items bought in duty free shops often have the duty taken off the RRP, it can make them a lot cheaper than if you bought the goods in a normal shop. However, there are usually limits on how much you can buy on your trip, and these limits will vary from country to country, and also vary from item to item (i.e. there will be different limits on alcohol and cigarettes).

The most popular items in duty free shops are usually the products that are most heavily taxed, i.e. alcohol, perfumes, and tobacco. Duty free inventories will vary from country to country, and also from airport to airport. In larger airports, you may even find different prices in the numerous shops - remember it's always best to shop around! Make sure you check our database to see all the shops at each airport, and then you can invesigate the prices at each one.

Sadly, you can't just turn up at a duty free shop with several empty suitcases and fill them up with goodies! Restrictions will be in place, and these can vary from country to country. You will only be allowed to buy certain amounts of different types of products. Tobacco, alcohol, and perfumes are usually the products that are most likely to be subject to the stricter allowances. Make sure you check whilst purchasing, or else you run the risk of your items being confiscated upon arrival at your destination's customs.

No. Duty free is only available to travellers who are flying from one country to another country.

Yes. Many duty free shops will allow you to pre-order any purchases online before your journey. You will need your boarding pass and passport when you pick the items up from the airport shop.

What is there to do upon arrival at Detroit Airport?

Once you arrive at the airport, you have the option to fuel up for your journey ahead by grabbing a bite to eat at any of the 53 available restaurants and cafes, or why not head straight for the duty-free shopping opportunities at the 56 different shops around Detroit Airport? Get a last-minute gift for a loved one, or spoil yourself with a well-deserved souvenir from your trip.

What airlines operate passenger services out of Detroit Airport?

The following airlines all fly passenger services out of Detroit Airport:

Detroit Airport Reviews

★★★★☆
No power on plane. Very comfortable newer plane, first class was nice. Meal was more than adequate. Fantastic crew on the plane. Alaska was to have power on all planes by end of 2014. Flight attendant stated only 2 planes had power in entire fleet - disappointing.
- Phylliss

★★★★☆
Flew out of the newer McNamara terminal. It is large, but easy to navigate with the tram. Plenty of areas to charge electronic devices and free wifi. Food and beverage choices are average. Not terrible, but not exciting.
- Danielle Byers

★★★★☆
Lots and lots of Delta flights , the new terminal is cooll and spacious with good views of the aircraft .Tram was out of use for routine maintenance on my visit . Nice bar area near gate 42 , handy for the Virgin Atlantic flights .
- BOB SYMES

★★★★☆
North Terminal is clean and efficient, but could probably use some more dining options. Overall, it is a nice modern terminal and the airport is easy to get to from I-94 with clear signage everywhere.
- Mayank Bhattarai

★★★☆☆
When we stopped in DTW the airport train was down, and all the restaurants had closed, and we got stuck overnight. The positives are the staff didn't kick us out, and that they have this really cool light up musical tunnel, but it's soo long.
- Cimarra

★★★★☆
Plenty of hotels near the airport and the shuttles are convenient. Check-in is fast with Fly Delta app. Only two security lines are not enough for the huge hub. Terminal is clean and the train is convenient. WiFi is very poor.
- Yangyang He

★★★★☆
North Terminal is nice but why are all the restaurants on the air side? Wish there would be some regard for people waiting for arrivals (the Legends bar near baggage claim is not what I'm looking for)
- Walter Mueller

★★★☆☆
Everything was closed. And also I feel bad for the people on the flight that my plane would do next. Lousy 12:30 AM Departure.
- -Airplanelover01-

★★★★★
One of my favorite airports. Modern, open, good wifi, good dining options and great mix of stores (not dominated with duty free or super luxury brands like other airports). Negatives are that there's no viable public transportation to the airport - its not really near anything. But if you have a car, it's very easy to get around and well organized right off the I-94 expressway
- Adam Supernant

★★★★★
DTW's Delta terminal is great. While it is big, it does have a train that you can take to get around the terminal faster.
