Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) is the main airport serving North West England, located just 4 kilometers south of Liverpool City Centre. It is the gateway to Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales and serves as a hub for airlines such Ryanair, Wizz Air, Flybe and KLM. The airport was founded in 1933 as Speke Airport but was later renamed in 2002 after local legend John Lennon.
Since its opening LJLA has grown considerably in size with new facilities including a main terminal building, airport control tower, air traffic control tower, cargo centre, passenger reception areas and a variety of shops and restaurants. In addition to scheduled services there are also charter flights available from the airport.
The airport has become increasingly popular over the years with over 5 million passengers each year making it one of the busiest airports in Europe. A dedicated train line known aptly as ‘the Airport Express’ connects Liverpool city centre directly with LJLA making it easy for both locals and visitors to get to their destination quickly.
In recent years LJLA has been awarded numerous accolades such as being recognised as one of Europe’s most efficient airports by Routes Europe magazine and receiving an award from Skytrax World Airport Awards in 2017 for Best Regional Airport UK & Ireland.
In addition to its size, LJLA is also known for its unique style which has made it one of the most visited places in Liverpool. The terminal building houses a range of artwork inspired by John Lennon’s music including iconic quotes on the walls, vinyl record cases and abstract sculptures depicting Beatles album covers all of which gives it a distinct atmosphere that can’t be found elsewhere.
