HONG KONG. Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) climbed by +1.3% year-on-year in the first six months of 2017, hitting 35.7 million. The growth was driven mainly by travel among Hong Kong residents, said the airport company.
In June, passenger traffic grew by +0.5% to 5.9 million, led by a +3% rise in Hong Kong resident traffic. Among key overseas routes for traffic, Japan recorded the most significant increase.
“As we see growth in air traffic, flight services at HKIA also continue to expand,” said Airport Authority Hong Kong General Manager, Airport and Industry Collaboration Henry Ma. “Recently two new airlines started operating at HKIA to provide more choice and convenience to passengers. Virgin Australia started operating five return flights per week between Hong Kong and Melbourne in July, while Air Japan commenced the operation of daily flights to Tokyo Narita International Airport in June. Also, Hong Kong Airlines expanded services to include a daily direct flight to Vancouver in June.”
On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger numbers grew +1.1% year-on-year to 71 million.
