Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, situated in Uttara, Dhaka, is the main international airport of Bangladesh. It is also one of the first airports in South Asia to have a dedicated Terminal 3 for international flights and long-haul services. The airport has a total of three runways and a single terminal, with an estimated capacity of 12 million passengers annually.
Named after Hazrat Shahjalal, a famous Sufi saint who arrived in Sylhet around 1303 CE, this airport serves as an important hub for international and domestic flights within Bangladesh and beyond. Many airlines offer direct flights from Dhaka to other parts of the world such as the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Plus, there are several domestic destinations available including Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rajshahi and Sylhet.
The airport was opened to the public on June 4th 2003 and has since seen tremendous growth in its services & facilities. It consists of a modern passenger terminal building equipped with all the latest technology – from self check-in kiosks to advanced baggage handling systems – as well as ample shopping opportunities. There’s also an array of food & beverage outlets located both inside & outside the terminal building for visitors who need to grab a bite before or after their flight.
In addition to its commercial operations, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is an important hub for military operations within Bangladesh – primarily used by Bangladesh Air Force & Border Guards Bangladesh.
