Hilo Airport, also known as General Lyman Field, is an airfield located in the city of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. It serves as a hub for inter-island flights and international flights to and from the United States mainland. The airport offers daily nonstop flights to Honolulu, Maui, Kona, and other destinations on Hawaiian Airlines as well as Alaska Airlines.

The airport was originally constructed during World War II and served both military and commercial aircraft until its closure in 1974. In 1975 it reopened under the management of the Hawaii State Department of Transportation. Since then it has become a major hub for inter-island travel with over 600,000 passengers passing through annually.

The majority of Hilo’s air traffic is domestic; however, it does offer some international connections. Flights to Canada are available on Air Canada Express while connecting flights to Asia are available via Korean Air Lines or Delta Airlines. Freight carriers such as FedEx also use Hilo Airport for shipping goods throughout Hawaii and the mainland United States.

Hilo Airport has two asphalt runways: one measuring 2,800 feet long and another measuring 5,300 feet long. These two runways provide service for both large jets as well as light single engine aircrafts used by private owners or smaller airlines servicing Hilo airstrips or surrounding islands. General aviation facilities at the airport include a fuel tank farm, terminal building with passenger waiting area, restaurant/cafe, gift shop and rental car offices.

In addition to providing commercial flight operations, Hilo Airport also hosts numerous events throughout the year including classic car shows, vintage aircraft displays and classic car rallies. Every April they host an annual fly-in breakfast that attracts thousands of people from all around the world to come out and take part in this unique event featuring vintage aircrafts from all eras performing flyovers above the runway!

Another popular tourist attraction at Hilo Airport is their observation deck which overlooks much of downtown Hilo Bay offering stunning views out over Mauna Kea volcano in the distance – perfect for watching planes come into land or take off! Visitors can even get up close views of some of their favorite airplanes by walking along one of two public viewing areas located near either end of Runway 4R/22L just outside security gates.

Overall, Hilo Airport is an essential part of life in lower Puna district – offering locals access to destinations across America as well as internationally; not to mention providing tourists with an opportunity to experience all that beautiful Hawaii has to offer! From cargo operations to leisurely sightseeing adventures – this airport will continue serving its purpose for many years to come!
