Mombasa Moi International Airport is one of the largest and busiest airports in East Africa. It serves Mombasa, a port city on the Indian Ocean Coast of Kenya, and is the gateway for much of the region’s international air traffic. The airport is situated approximately 5km north-east of central Mombasa and lies within an area known as Changamwe, Nairobi Province.
The airport was first opened in 1941 as Port Reitz Airport, named after Arthur Reitz who had helped develop the port facilities back in 1929. During World War II it served as a base for Allied armed forces and was heavily damaged by Japanese bombing raids during this time. After being rebuilt following the war, it was renamed Moi International Airport in 1992 to honour then-President Daniel Arap Moi.
Today, Mombasa Moi International Airport covers a total area of 833 hectares and comprises two terminals; Domestic and International. It boasts 6 runways with a capacity to handle up to 25 million passengers per year and has been ranked amongst Africa’s fastest growing airports in terms of passenger numbers over recent years. In 2019 alone it welcomed over 4 million passengers from all over the world. The airport also acts as an important transit hub for travelers connecting between flights from Europe, Asia and Africa’s interior regions – including Nairobi – with major airlines such as Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and Air India Express operating out of its terminals.
Mombasa Moi International Airport offers travelers access to a wide range of amenities to make their stay more comfortable including ATMs & banking services, retail outlets (selling everything from snacks to products made locally), pharmacies, duty free stores, car rental services & parking lots plus several cafes & restaurants offering traditional Kenyan dishes along with popular international cuisines including Italian & Chinese food. There are also several hotels conveniently located close by should you need somewhere to rest before continuing your journey or if you just want to take some time out between flights.
Finally, travelers looking for something more leisurely can take advantage of those same dining options – many offer incredible views across Mombasa’s lush green uplands – visit the nearby Camel House Cultural Center where you can learn about local customs & traditions or hop onto one of Mombasa’s sightseeing buses which will give you an interesting insight into some of its iconic landmarks like Fort Jesus or Akamba Handicraft Village at Haller Park Nature Reserve; both just a short drive away from the airport itself!
