Macau International Airport is the main airport serving the special administrative region of Macau, in the People’s Republic of China. It is located on Taipa Island and operated by the government-owned Macau International Airport Company Limited. The airport opened in 1995 and has since become a major hub for airlines such as China Southern Airlines, Air Macau, Xiamen Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Shandong Airlines. As of 2019, it served over 8 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in Mainland China.

The airport offers direct flights to many destinations within mainland China as well as numerous international destinations including Bangkok, Hong Kong, Nagano, Manila and Taipei. Other services include general aviation operations and cargo flights servicing Europe or North America. The two runways at Macau Airport are both paved with asphalt and measure 4,000 meters in length each and 60 meters wide. Both runways have been designed to support all types of aircrafts including large jetliners such as Boeing 747s or Airbus A380s.

The terminal building at Macau airport has three floors dedicated to arrivals, departures and other facilities such as restaurants and retail stores. Due to its close proximity to downtown Macau (just 3 km away), passengers can easily travel from the airport using several forms of public transportation such as buses or taxis. For those looking for more convenience there is also a heliport adjacent to the airport for transfers between Taipa Island and downtown Macau or mainland China. The airport also features a state-of-the-art duty free area with a selection of duty free goods ranging from souvenirs to alcohol or tobacco products.

The Macau Airport has long been known for its commitment to provide top-notch services while keeping passenger safety a priority at all times; this fact was made evident when it achieved full certification from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2000 becoming one of only five airports in Mainland China with this privilege . Furthermore, recent investments have allowed for new technology-driven solutions that improve passenger’s experience such as facial recognition boarding technology which drastically improves check-in time. In addition to these efforts in 2019 the construction began for a new Terminal 2 which is expected to open by 2024 increasing capacity up to 14 million passengers per year making it one of the largest air hubs in Asia Pacific region.
