This airport’s name reflects its proximity to the ancient city of Carthage. It has two asphalt runways that are 3,200 meters and 2,840 meters long. The number of passengers that passed through the gates in 2014 was 5.1 million, and it sees flights from over 25 airlines, including seasonal carriers, moving across its tarmac.
TUN opened in 1920 when it was first used for seaplanes, and in 1938, over 5,000 passengers flew to and from Paris annually. It was used by the United States Air Force in WWII and as a base for the Italian Campaign in 1943. It was a stopover for cargo, aircraft and personnel for the war. Passenger traffic resumed in the 1950s, and the terminal was expanded in the 1990s to reach a total capacity of 5.1 million.
The airport can be reached by buses and taxis, and there are numerous parking places available at the terminal. Shopping, food and drink can all be found on site.
