José Martí International Airport, also known as José Martí International Airport or simply Havana Airport, is the main international airport of Cuba and the largest in the country. Located about 15 km (9 miles) southwest of Havana, this airport serves as a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota and Aero Caribbean. The airport is named after Cuban nationalist José Martí, who fought for independence from Spain in the late 19th century.
The airport has two runways and one terminal building, with an approximate area of 84620 m2 (91000 sq ft). It is well-connected to other areas of Havana via bus transport. There are plenty of shops at the airport selling souvenirs, drinks and food items such as sandwiches, pastries and other snacks. Passengers can also access Wi-Fi at certain locations in the terminal building.
José Martí International Airport offers over 25 destinations within Cuba itself as well as to other countries including France, Mexico, Russia and Canada. In addition to scheduled flights by commercial airlines like Air Europa Express, American Airlines and TUI fly Deutschland there are also charter services available from this airport. With its regular passenger traffic increasing steadily over time José Martí International Airport has become an important gateway into Cuba for both business travelers and tourists alike.
In recent years various upgrades have been made to improve infrastructure at the airport such as improvements to its runway system which now covers 200 hectares (494 acres), new baggage handling facilities, modernised ticketing counters and new check-in desks for international services. Additionally there are several car rental companies located nearby the terminal building making it easier for travelers to explore all that Havana and Cuba have to offer without having to worry about transportation options.
