This airport has two concrete runways and three concrete helipads. Two disconnected terminals require shuttle services to reach. The main terminal, the Barbara Jordan Terminal, has 34 gates, and the secondary terminal, the South Terminal, has three gates and no airbridges. The plans for the airport include the ability to handle 31 million passengers.
AUS started as a United States Army Air Force base in 1942 and was decommissioned in 1990. When Austin outgrew their other airport, it moved operations to the old base where it could incorporate what was already built, including the barely used runways. The old tower was replaced, and the first passenger to arrive at the new airport was President Bill Clinton on Air Force One.
Passengers can use ride share, rental cars, buses, taxis and shuttles to get to and from the airport. Parking is available in two garages and a quick walk to the main terminal. Reservations for parking are suggested.
