Vijayawada Airport is an international airport serving the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located about 15 kilometres from the city centre and connected to most major cities in India as well as some international destinations. The airport offers both domestic and international flights, with a total of 8 airlines operating out of it. The airport has two terminals – Terminal 1 which operates domestic flights and Terminal 2 which offers both domestic and international flights.
The airport was established in 1988 with the official opening being held on 25th February 1989. At the time it was known as Gannavaram Airport but was renamed after former Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao upon his death in 1996. Since then it has been known as Vijayawada Airport, although its ICAO code still remains VOBZ. The airport opened with much anticipation due to its convenient location near many major educational institutions, business centres and tourist attractions in Andhra Pradesh.
The airport underwent a major expansion between 2006-2010 with a new terminal building as well as other refurbishments being completed during this period. This allowed for increased air traffic at the airport leading to more airlines offering their services there. Currently around 70-80 passenger aircraft arrive or depart from Vijayawada each day making it one of the busiest airports in India outside of the four metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata).
