VC Bird International Airport is a major international airport located in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Named after Vere Cornwall (VC) Bird, the first prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, it is the gateway to the country for international visitors. The airport is situated on the south coast of Antigua island, approximately 15 kilometers from St. John’s, the capital city of Antigua and Barbuda.

VC Bird International Airport first opened to commercial traffic in July 1949, when Pan American World Airways began regular operations to Miami, Florida. Over the years, it has grown to become one of the busiest airports in the Eastern Caribbean region and plays an increasingly important role in tourism as a hub for air travel between North America and Europe. The airport currently serves more than 2 million passengers annually with flights to over 50 destinations around the world.

In recent years, VC Bird Airport has seen significant investments in order to meet increasing demand from both local travelers and international visitors alike. In 2013 a new terminal building was opened which doubled its capacity, making it one of the most modern airports in the Caribbean. Extensive renovations have also been made to improve passenger comfort and convenience including a new shopping plaza with duty-free stores and restaurants as well as additional check-in counters and gates for departing flights. Additional projects are planned for completion by 2020 including an expansion of their cargo facilities and runway lengthening works that will facilitate larger aircrafts such as wide-bodied jets like Boeing 777s or Airbus A380s.

The VC Bird International Airport is also home to many different aviation related businesses such as charter companies, aircraft maintenance offices, fueling services as well as car rental agencies providing seamless transportation options for travelers coming through this bustling hub. With its strategic geographical location at one of busiest sea routes between North America and Europe, VC Bird International Airport offers travelers an easy and enjoyable way to reach their destination safely while enjoying all that beautiful islands of Antigua & Barbuda have to offer!
