Sharp increase in Lufthansa passenger numbers following Brussels Airlines integration

The airlines of the Lufthansa Group welcomed around 11.2 million passengers in April 2017, an increase of 25.1 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The available seat kilometres were up 15.8 per cent over the previous year, and at the same time, sales increased by 25.2 per cent.

The seat load factor improved accordingly, rising 6.2 percentage points to 82.3 per cent, compared to April 2016.

As a result, Lufthansa Group has reached new record results in the number of passengers, as well as the utilisation of its aircraft, for the month of April.

The currency adjusted pricing environment was negative in April, due to the fact that Easter, with its higher share of private travel, occurred in March last year.

Cargo capacity increased 3.8 per cent year-on-year, while cargo sales were up six per cent in revenue ton-kilometre terms.

The network airlines – Lufthansa German Airlines, SWISS and Austrian Airlines – carried 8.4 million passengers in April, 12.0 per cent more than in the prior-year period.

The Lufthansa Group’s point-to-point airlines – Eurowings (including Germanwings) and Brussels Airlines – carried approximately 2.8 million passengers in April.

Among this total, 2.6 million passengers were on short-haul flights and 200,000 flew long-haul.

This amounts to an increase of 93.3 per cent in comparison to the previous year.

April capacity was 129.7 per cent above its prior-year level, while its sales volume was up 148.4 per cent, resulting in 6.2 percentage points higher seat load factor.

The change was largely driven by the acquisition and integration of Brussels Airlines into the figures.
