Managua Sandino International Airport is the main airport of Nicaragua, located in the city of Managua. It is one of Latin America’s busiest airports and the hub for most major airlines operating in Nicaragua. It serves the country’s capital, Managua, as well as other cities throughout Nicaragua and Central America.

The airport was originally built as a military facility in 1942 by then President Anastasio Somoza García, who named it after Augusto César Sandino – a Nicaraguan revolutionary leader who opposed foreign occupation of his country. In 1973, it underwent significant renovations and re-opened to commercial air traffic.

The airport complex consists of two terminals–one for domestic flights and one for international flights–as well as a few cargo buildings, three runways and various hangars. The main terminal building is relatively modern and houses several shops, restaurants and cafés, as well as numerous offices with which passengers can check-in or arrange accommodation during their stay in Nicaragua. There are also banks located within the terminal offering currency exchange services.

The Managua Sandino Airport provides direct flights to many destinations throughout Central America and the Caribbean Islands, including Mexico City, Guatemala City, Panama City, San José (Costa Rica), Havana (Cuba), Bogota (Colombia) and Santiago (Chile). Recently it has added a few more international destinations to its list such as Amsterdam (Netherlands), Fort Lauderdale (USA) and Toronto (Canada). Passengers looking to fly domestically have access to various airports throughout Nicaragua including Bluefields International Airport near the Caribbean coast.

In addition to its role as an international gateway into Nicaragua and Central America, Managua Sandino Airport also serves as an important platform for freight transportation in the region due to its strategic location near Lake Managua – an inland body of water that connects all major ports on both coasts of Nicaragua with each other. The majority of freight carriers operating out of this airport transport agricultural products such as coffee beans or sugar cane from around the world into Nicaraguan ports before being distributed further within the country or exported elsewhere across Latin America.

Given its importance in transporting passengers into and out of Nicaragua, Managua Sandino International Airport has been constantly expanding over recent years with new construction projects taking place regularly since 2005 when authorities introduced important changes such as building renovations along with expansions to existing structures so that they could comply with international safety regulations set by ICAO organizations like FAA. By 2020 these modifications had managed to increase capacity at this airport by over 15% allowing for even more passenger traffic through this air hub than ever before!
