Found only in the Merelani foothills of Tanzania, tanzanite was rst discovered by Maasai herders traversing the African plains after a storm. They stumbled upon these magni cent blue stones after a bolt of lightning or re had turned the natural brown crystals to the now iconic violet blue.
The mineral was named by Tiffany & Co, whose original marketing campaign advertised that tanzanite could now be found in two places – “Tanzania and at Tiffany’s”.
