Kelowna Airport is a regional airport located in the city of Kelowna, British Columbia. It is the eleventh busiest airport in Canada, handling over 2 million passengers annually. Additionally, it is the second busiest airport in British Columbia and the fourth busiest in Western Canada. The airport has two runways, one for general aviation (GA) aircraft and one for commercial traffic. It offers scheduled passenger service to several major destinations throughout North America as well as international flights.
The Kelowna Airport first opened its doors in 1930 and was initially operated by a private airfield operator. In 1953, Transport Canada assumed control of the facility and began expanding it to meet modern needs and standards. Since then, the airport has undergone multiple expansions and upgrades to increase its capacity, including the addition of new runways and terminals. Currently, there are three main buildings: an administrative building with offices for airlines, private companies and services; a separate cargo building that handles freight operations; and lastly, the main terminal building where all commercial passenger operations take place.
In addition to its two primary runways – 10/28 which is used mainly by GA aircrafts – Kelowna also has an approved Instrument Flight Procedures (IFP) runway with an ILS system installed at both ends; this allows pilots to fly safely into cloud cover or poor visibility conditions without having to perform visual approaches or landings. This IFP runway is used heavily by local operators as well as national airlines such as Air Canada Express that fly into Kelowna from various points within North America on a regular basis. Pilots also use this runway to bypass larger airports like Vancouver International Airport due to air traffic congestion at peak times of year when more flights are competing for space on limited airspace routes over British Columbia’s lower mainland region.
Kelowna also boasts numerous ground services available for travelers including car rental firms (Avis & Hertz), several restaurants such as Tim Hortons & White Spot Piri Piri Chicken & Fish that offer quick meals during busy travel days; onsite hotels (e.g., Sandman Inn); salons & spa services; jewelry stores; gift shops & souvenir centers; currency exchange booths; luggage storage facilities; comfortable waiting areas with Wi-Fi access throughout the building; updates flight information monitors located around each terminal lobby area plus ATMs & vending machines offering snacks & beverages while customers await boarding calls or check-in procedures ahead of their flight departures or arrivals into beautiful Canadian city of Kelowna!
