Kangerlussuaq Airport (KUS) is situated in the city of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. It is one of the only two airports that service the West Coast of Greenland. KUS serves as an international airport and a hub for both passenger and cargo traffic. The airport is owned by the Danish Government and is operated by the Greenlandic Airports Authority.

Built in 1992, KUS sits at an elevation of 397 feet above sea level and has been modernized several times since its inception. It has two asphalt runways–11/29 at 7,000 feet long and 18/36 at 5,755 feet long–as well as an additional runway which serves helicopters only. There are also two taxiways connected to the airfield to facilitate aircraft movement on ground level.

KUS primarily handles flights to Denmark, Finland, Norway and other international destinations in Europe via Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). It also provides direct flights to Iceland’s capital Reykjavik with Icelandair twice a week. Additionally, tourist groups visiting Greenland can arrange charter flights from various cities around Europe to KUS with various airlines including Air Greenland, DAT Danish Air Transport, Jet Time and more.

The airport itself boasts excellent infrastructure for passenger facilities including check-in counters for all airlines operating in KUS, as well as baggage reclaim belts, security checks and immigration services. The terminal building houses restaurants, shops and duty-free stores offering souvenirs related to local culture and heritage items exclusive to Greenland only. Other amenities include car hire desks where travelers can rent a vehicle before embarking on their journey around the country or simply catch a shuttle bus organized by tour operators running between popular tourist attractions such as Ilulissat Icefjord or Nuuk City located less than three hours away from KUS by road.

In addition to serving passengers en route to holiday destinations in Greenland or onward journeys overseas via connecting flights out of Denmark’s Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Kangerlussuaq Airport has become increasingly important as a key transportation hub servicing oil exploration trips into neighboring regions of North-West Greenland due to its close proximity to Uummannaq Fjord – one of the world’s richest fishing grounds for halibut and codfish – making it an ideal stopover point for scientists conducting research around this area too.

All these factors have helped transform Kangerlussuaq Airport into a bustling aviation gateway providing essential services not just for pleasure seekers but vital personnel traveling between East-West coasts within Greenland itself or heading further afield for scientific studies or commercial purposes alike; all combining together nicely into one dynamic melting pot of cultures coming together at this Arctic airport every day!
