Juan Santamaría International Airport, located in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica, is the country’s primary international airport. The airport serves as an important gateway to Costa Rica and provides connections to the Caribbean, North and South America, Europe, and other destinations around the world. Juan Santamaría International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Central America with more than 2 million passengers traveling through it annually.
The airport was named after Costa Rican hero Juan Santamaría who died while fighting against American forces in 1856 during an invasion that sought to overthrow then-President Juan Rafael Mora Porras. The airport’s official name is Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría de Alajuela. It is commonly known as San José International Airport or simply Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO).
Juan Santamaría International Airport has one main passenger terminal that handles both domestic and international flights. Airlines operating at the airport include TACA (now Avianca), Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, Copa Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines and Spirit Airlines.
