It is government-owned with both charter and scheduled flights. It is the busiest in the summer and a destination for many European cities. It was founded in 1937 and named after the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias. During WWII, it was used by both German and Italian forces and had a 600-meter runway. Today, the runway is 2,373 meters (7,785 feet) and has one terminal.
CFU saw its first commercial flight in 1949 when a small aircraft with seven passengers from Athens arrived at the airport. Its original terminal was replaced in 1962 when more airways like Aristotle Onassis’ Olympic Airways offered international flights that needed both a terminal and an air traffic control tower.
Getting to CFU is easy. There are buses, taxis and car rentals to get you to and from the terminal. There are 271 parking spots with a fence and security for both short- and long-term parking. Shopping and refreshments are conveniently located in the terminal.
