Düsseldorf Airport (IATA: DUS, ICAO: EDDL), is an airport serving the Duesseldorf area in Germany. Düsseldorf Airport is one of Germany’s busiest airports and serves as the main hub for Air Berlin, Eurowings, Lufthansa and many other major carriers. Located just 7km (4.3 miles) from downtown Düsseldorf, the airport is easily accessible by train, bus or car. The airport has two terminals with a total of 96 gates for arriving and departing flights. It also features a number of restaurants, cafes and retail stores for travelers to enjoy while waiting for their flights.
The airport was opened in 1927 and has undergone several expansions since then. In 2005 it underwent a massive renovation which included the introduction of new infrastructure such as an automated baggage system and a modern control tower. It now covers an area of 886 hectares (2,186 acres) and handles more than 22 million passengers per year making it the third-busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport.
The airport offers both domestic and international service with direct flights to over 205 destinations in about 50 countries across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa along with numerous connecting flights throughout Europe. The majority of these routes are operated by Air Berlin followed closely by Eurowings and Lufthansa. The airport also features its own cargo terminal which serves over 40 airlines offering freight services around the world. With over 100 daily freight-only operations it is one of the largest cargo hubs in Europe.
In addition to being an important transportation hub, Düsseldorf Airport is also home to a number of attractions such as the Flight Simulation Center where visitors can simulate flying commercial airplanes on a full-motion simulator; Skydeck Observation Deck located on top of the main passenger terminal offering spectacular views of the runways; Aviapolis – an aviation theme park featuring interactive exhibits related to aviation history; Aviation Museum showcasing vintage planes from all eras; Business Lounge providing comfortable seating areas for business travellers; Family lounge providing parents much needed downtime with their children accompanied by various activities like arts & crafts or video games; as well as Duty Free Shop offering discounted prices on alcohol, tobacco products and other items exclusive to duty free shops at airports around the world.
