There are over 20 airlines that stop at BDS, and most of those flights are seasonal from places like Munich and Barcelona.

BDS started as a military base in the 1920s before commercial flights to Rome began flying in and out in the 30s. While there are still military operations at the airport, it became a fully civilian airport in 2008. Its official name is Brindisi Papola Casale Airport after the Italian pilot, Antonio Papola. Because of its location in the Mediterranean, it is a strategic NATO support stop for peacekeeping.

Ground transportation includes buses and taxis, as well as a selection of rental cars. There are two parking areas for long- and short-term parking. The first 15 minutes are free.
