It is one of the oldest operating airports, opening in 1916, and until 1960, was the main Roman airport. The Norge left this airport in 1926 and was the first one to land at the North Pole. The first helicopter design was tested in this airport in 1930. It was home to the United States Army Air Force during WWII when they captured it.
