BHX opened its doors in 1939, and the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy used this airport during WWII where they operated a flight school. The RAF paved the grass airstrips, and after the war, the airport was used for air races, fairs and other public events. A second terminal was added in 1961, and the runway was extended to accommodate larger jets. The Concorde landed at BHX in 1980. The Airbus A380 was able to land at the new 3-story pier in 2008. Growth and modernization followed in the 2000s.
Several car parks are available for long- and short-term parking within walking distance of the terminal. There are shuttle buses for those lots further away. Ground transportation includes trains, buses, coaches and taxis.
